Falcon Flyer – May 2012

Posted Wednesday, May 9th, 2012 by Mrs. Lewis

Dear Fairview Community,

Below is the link for the last edition of the Falcon Flyer for the 2011-2012 school year.  It is hard to believe that we have less than a month left of school.  Yet, even though the school year is winding down there are several events planned for the next few weeks to keep the momentum going.  There are some important items in this newsletter that I would like to highlight.  The first is the Scholastic Read For The World Record that Fairview will participate in all summer long.  Our goal is to keep kids reading while working towards being one of the top schools with reading minutes.

The second item, which is listed with the future events, and on the calendar is our Field Day.  If you are able to volunteer during our field day, please connect with our physical education teacher, Mr. Hawkins.

Finally, there is an item that is not listed in this edition.  We will once again be having our Supply Drop Off event.  This event will take place on August 20th from 3:00 -4:30 p.m.  This is a wonderful opportunity to come with your child to drop off their school supplies the day before school begins and meet their teacher.

Enjoy reading this edition and have a wonderful rest of the week!

Falcon Flash – April 20, 2012

Posted Sunday, April 22nd, 2012 by Mrs. Lewis

Dear Fairview Community,

Looking outside today it looks like Autumn rather than Spring!  The dreary day doesn’t put a damper on the day at Fairview as students walked in with smiles and were ready for the day of learning.  Next week is a rather busy week and I wanted to take a moment to remind our community about some of the events that will be taking place.

  • MAP Testing – We will begin our Spring MAP testing next week.  It will be great to look at our student data and see the growth that they have made throughout the year.
  • FAST FAIR (Science Fair)-  Students will have their opportunity to showcase their projects at our FAST Fair next week, on Tuesday the 24th.  Tuesday night will be our family and awards ceremony
  • Open House/Celebrate Reading and Writing – Our annual Open House partnered with our Celebrate Reading and Writing will take place on Wednesday, April 25th.  Please join us before the Open House for our P.T.A. general membership meeting at 6:30 p.m. in the school gym.

Looking ahead to next month, our P.E. teacher is planning for Field Day.  Information about volunteering was sent out in our last Falcon Flyer.  Mr. Hawkins will soon be sending home more information about volunteering for this event.  The students have a wonderful time at our field day and this year it will take place on May 24th.  Please feel free to contact Mr. Hawkins at JimHawkins@sd54.org if you are interested in volunteering.

Our parent committee overseeing Rite of Passage for our sixth grade students is busy at work.  A form was recently sent home for students to purchase the class t-shirt that all students will be wearing at this year’s Rite of Passage.  Please return the forms, with your t-shirt money, to the school as soon as possible so they may place the order.

There is a link below.  The link is from our P.T.A.’s Reading Recognition Committee.  The form needs to be turned into the school no later than May 1st.   The Boomers have some great incentives for your child and all they have to do is read!

Have a wonderful weekend and I look forward to seeing many of you next week at our Science Fair, and Open House.

Dear Fairview Community,

Click the link below for the April edition of the Falcon Flyer.  There is a lot happening at Fairview of the next several weeks, so please take a moment to read through the newsletter.  I would like to highlight just a few things that happened this past week or will be happening shortly.   First, I am excited to inform our community that we filled a total of 73 boxes for the district food pantry housed at Mead Junior High.  It is wonderful to see the generosity of our community.   Finally, this weekend the Schaumburg Park District with our school district is hosting A Garden of Diversity.  Clcik the link below to access more information about the event.

Falcon Flash – March 23, 2012

Posted Friday, March 23rd, 2012 by Mrs. Lewis

Dear Fairview Community,

It’s the last day before we head off to Spring Break!  This week has been a full week at Fairview.  The students enjoyed a P.B.I.S. assembly, where they were told the school met their monthly goal.  Due to their wonderful behavior students enjoyed an assembly on Wednesday, by Matt Wilhelm.  I am sure many of your children came home excited about the program.   There are some pictures on our school website for your viewing.

As you can imagine, your children are very excited as they look forward to their week ahead.  Many of the journal prompts today have been around what students will be doing during their break.  The teachers are ensuring that students are working up until 3:00 p.m. and finding a variety of methods to engage them in the process.   I am sure that many of you have some plans for the upcoming week.  I hope that you are able to take some time to make some fun memories with your children.

When our students return in April, they will face a calendar filled with activities.  On April 12th, our P.T.A., will host Donuts with Dads.  Your children will be bringing home information in their backpacks.  On April 17th our second grade students will have their evening music performance, but will also showcase their talents for the rest of the school during the day.  Many students have been busy getting prepared for the science fair that will take place on the 24th of April at 7:00 p.m.  The following day the energy continues with Fairview’s Open House and Celebrate Reading and Writing event.  I am sure you are excited to stop by the classrooms and see the amazing things they have been learning, and to read books by our wonderful authors.  There are also different grade levels that will have field trips or other activities happening within their classrooms.  Please keep an eye out for letters that may be coming home.  I am including information on a summer camp that will be taking place within the district, and registration begins in April.

Click the following link for more information: TechCampSchoolFlyer

I hope all of you have a safe and wonderful week.    We will be ready to spring into learning on April 2nd.   As a reminder, please remember that we do not have school on April 6th

Falcon Flyer – March 2012

Posted Thursday, March 8th, 2012 by Mrs. Lewis

Dear Fairview Community,

We have finished our second day of ISAT testing!  The students are doing a great job, and we are half way done.  Thank you for your support with ensuring that your children are well-rested and have a healthy breakfast.

I have included the March edition of the Falcon Flyer.  There is a ton of information enclosed with this edition. There are a few items that have not made it into this edition that I wanted to bring to your attention.  The first item is in regards to our PTA.  We are currently looking to fill some of the key positions within our PTA board.  Below is a link to some information about the positions that are open and information about the nominating committee.  Please read the information and if you have any questions about the positions open, you may contact any of the members of the nominating committee.

The second item I would like to bring to your attention is in regards  to our summer music programs for our instrumental students.   Registration for District 54’s Summer Band and Orchestra program has begun!  District 54 students who have completed fifth, sixth, or seventh grade and have had lessons on their instrument for at least one school year are eligible to enroll.  Summer Band and Orchestra will take place July 9-26 (Mondays-Thursdays) at Keller Junior High School.  Registration forms are available from any instrumental music teacher or at http://sd54.org/music/instrumental/summerprogram .  You may also contact the band/orchestra teacher at your school or call 847-357-5138.

Finally, I would like to point out some key dates that are on the calendar within this edition of the Falcon Flyer.

  • March P.T.A. Meeting – March 14th
  • Spring Break – March 26th –March 30th
  • Student and Staff Non-Attendance Day – April 6th
  • April P.T.A. Meeting  April 4th

Falcon Flash – March 5, 2012

Posted Monday, March 5th, 2012 by Mrs. Lewis

Dear Fairview Parents,

March has arrived!  Starting tomorrow, March 6th, our third through sixth grade students will be taking their ISAT tests.  All students will be taking three reading tests and three math tests.  Fourth grade students will also have to take two science tests.  These tests are required by the state of Illinois, and all public school children participate in this testing.  We will be following the same schedule as we did last year.  Our students will test in the morning Tuesday through Friday.  Please ensure your child is well rested and has a healthy breakfast to help them focus and give their best performance.

On Wednesday, your child will be bringing home their progress reports.   Many of our students are making progress from their first trimester.  It is great to see the individual growth that is made by each student.  The progress reports allow you to reflect on how your child is doing in each content area and in a variety of strands within each content area.  If you have any questions about your child’s progress, please contact the classroom teacher.

Finally, I would like to remind parents about arrival and dismissal procedures.  Please remember that the parking lot is closed in the morning.  Parents may not drive into the parking lot to drop-off their children.  Children may be dropped off on Arizona Boulevard and walk up to the sidewalk leading up to the school.   During dismissal parents are also not allowed to drive into the parking lot.  I would also like to request that parents do not bring family pets onto the school grounds.  Pets are a wonderful part of a child’s life but with 600 students leaving the building, they can quickly become aroused or change their demeanor.  Please also be considerate of our neighbors and avoid blocking their driveways and walking across their front yards.

Falcon Flash – January 31, 2012

Dear Fairview Community,

It is hard to believe that we are in the middle of winter with the current weather.  Tomorrow we start a new month and one would think it would be April but it is February.  Although, I am enjoying the mild winter I fear that Mother Nature may extend our winter with cold temperatures later on in the season.  Let’s keep those fingers crossed that she doesn’t.

This Friday our P.T.A. is hosting their Dance Party.  There has been a lot of planning and preparation going into this event.  I hope that you are able to join us and are ready to move.  Within this Falcon Flash, I am attaching a flyer from our P.T.A. with more information about the event.  Please note that there are no drop-offs.    Parents/guardians must stay with their children the entire night.    The night is geared to be a fun night for everyone.

Click the link to find out more information about the 80′s Party: Totally 80′s Party

Also, you will find a link to District 54′s Superintendent, Mr. Rafferty’s latest Daily Herald article to the community dated January 12th:   Midyear Report on District 54 Progress

If you are one of our wonderful parents that hosted one of our recent classroom holiday parties, the P.T.A. would like to remind the room representatives to please turn in any receipts that you may have.  Please turn those receipts into to our treasurer as soon as possible.   One option for turning in the receipts is to send them to the school office in an envelope labeled P.T.A. Room Representative Receipts and we will make sure that the treasurer receives the envelope.

Keep a look-out for the monthly Falcon Flyer, that will be arriving within the next week or so.  The monthly edition always has a wealth of information about the district and Fairview.

Falcon Flash – January 11, 2012

Posted Wednesday, January 18th, 2012 by Mrs. Lewis

Dear Fairview Community,

I hope you are having a wonderful January!  It seems like winter has decided to make an appearance and we will soon have snow.  The students have been able to enjoy the wonderful January weather and as long as the frigid temperatures do not make an appearance we will continue to enjoy the outdoors.   I have enjoyed the break from the cold and although the kids might be looking forward to the snow, I am sure many of you are like me and are not looking forward to the shoveling.  After you spend some time in the winter weather, take a moment with a warm cup of tea and read our recent edition of the Falcon Flyer.

I am sure many of you have your calendars marked for our conferences, and are looking forward to tomorrow when you will hear  your children share all that they have learned.  The students have been reflecting on their work from the beginning of the year until now, looking at their data , and other forms of student assessments.  It has been great to go into the classrooms and see their work portfolios.  They are rather excited to share all their information with their parents tomorrow.

In the interest of keeping our students safe, District 54 would like to reinforce a few laws and policies concerning smoking, cell phone use and school buses.

No Smoking at Schools

District 54 policy prohibits smoking or the use of tobacco products on district property and in district facilities, regardless of whether students are present or school is in session. Individuals or groups using or renting facilities are also banned from smoking or using tobacco products in District 54 facilities or on District 54 properties.

School Bus Stop Arm Violations
It is unlawful for a driver to pass a school bus that has stopped to load or unload children when its stop signal arm is extended. Any driver traveling in the same direction as the bus is required to stop his vehicle when the driver is on a road fewer than four lanes of traffic.

Cell Phone Use in School Zones

It is unlawful for any person, regardless of age, to use a cell phone at any time while operating a motor vehicle on a roadway in a school speed zone.

I am also including some other information that pertains to our school district.  Below you may click on a link to access some information about our Community Closet.  This is a great resource for our district families.  In addition, below is a link in regards to the Open Enrollment  Fair.   District 54 is very fortunate to have a variety of schools that are considered schools of choice.  These school range from dual language, a math and science academy and a K-8 facility.

Falcon Flash – December 2, 2011

Posted Friday, December 2nd, 2011 by Mrs. Lewis

Dear Fairview Community,

Can you believe it is December?  It is amazing to think that we are in the last month of 2011!  After today, there will only be two more weeks of school before our winter break.  Those two weeks will go by rather quickly, as we will be busy learning and completing our MAP testing.  Before we head out on our winter break, there are a few events that I would like to bring to your attention.

  • On December 6th, our fourth grade team is hosting a  Chipotle fundraiser for their trip to Springfield in May.
  • Our P.T.A. is sponsoring a fundraiser through California Pizza Kitchen on the 7th of December.  See the link below for the flyer for this event.
  • On December 8th, our school social worker and school psychologist will be facilitating a parent support class.  This will take place in the evening at 6:30 p.m.
  • Classroom parties will be taking place on the 16th of December.  These parties are facilitated by our room parents and volunteers.  If you signed up to provide supplies or treats for the classroom, you may send them in with your child or drop them off at the school office.

Have a wonderful weekend!

Dear Fairview Community,

I am sure many of you are getting ready for Thanksgiving and the extended weekend!  Before you head off to enjoy family and friends I wanted to share a few announcements with you.

  •  The Family Movie Night scheduled for Tuesday night, on November 22nd has been canceled.  Due to licensing restrictions we are not currently able to host the family movie night.
  • MAP testing will begin on Monday, November 28th.  Students in grades kindergarten through sixth grade will participate in a reading and math assessment.
  • The temperature is dropping as we inch closer to winter.  Please make sure that students have appropriate attire for recess.  All students will go out to recess unless the temperature goes down to zero.
  • If you plan on doing some holiday shopping at Best Buy mention Fairview School at the check-out and a percent of your purchase will directly benefit Fairview School.

Have a wonderful Thanksgiving!
