Would You Like Fries with That?

Posted Thursday, May 10th, 2012 by Mrs. Lewis
In 6th grade Art, students learned about possible careers in art.  We focused on Art Education and the many steps, preperation and projects that being an art teacher entails.  Students then were informed that they were going to be the art teacher! 6th grade students went into AM and PM Kindergarten classes and taught them an art lesson on texture.  Kindergarten students built a hamburger with a 6th grade helper out of tissue paper, piper cleaners, scratch paper and more! These burgers had cheese, tomatos, worms, ice cream, Skittles, flowers and some out of this world toppings! They put the Whopper to shame! We had so much fun with Kindergarten and 6th grade and I want to thank them for letting us come and teach.  Enjoy the pictures!

Lions and Tigers and Bears…Oh My!

Posted Saturday, May 5th, 2012 by Mrs. Lewis

OK…it wasn’t really lions and tigers and bears that invaded Fairview School but rather some fascinating community members.  On Wednesday, May 2nd, Fairview hosted their first Job Fair where a variety of community members came to share with the students about their careers.  Students got an opportunity to meet with a nurse, lawyer, occupational therapist, chiropractor, mechanical engineer or several other professionals.  The professionals shared the positives and negatives of their jobs, salary ranges, education requirements and general information about their careers.  The students were great audiences and ask some very insightful questions.

Thank you to our professionals who made the event a great success.  A special shout out to Mr. Mike Scheid, our Social Worker, for organizing this incredibly beneficial and educational event!

Fairview Gives Back!

Posted Sunday, April 22nd, 2012 by Mrs. Lewis

What a giving community Fairview is!  Fairview School organized a food drive, providing canned goods and other non-perishables for Schaumburg District 54′s very own own food pantry.  The food pantry is housed at Mead Junior High and provides many families with food items at times of need.

 When the food drive was complete, Fairview families donated 72 boxes of food to help those in need.  The Student Leadership Team boxed all the food items up and it was delivered to the food pantry.

How Seussical!

“From there to here, and here to there, funny things are everywhere!”

Last week the 2nd graders at Fairview put on a musical that was just Seussical!  Decked out in their Cat in the Hat top hats, white gloves and red ties, the students sangs songs based on many of Theodor Seuss Geisel books.  Who is Theodor Seuss Geisel?  He is the famous author better known as Dr. Seuss.   Way to go, 2nd graders!

Sweet Home Chicago!

Posted Friday, April 13th, 2012 by Mrs. Lewis

3rd grade students have been researching a building in Chicago for class and then constructing a replica of that building in art class.  Students have been doing a wonderful job! Using recyclable boxes and paper mache, these architects are on the final stages of completing their projects. Come see Chicago all set up during Open House in the 3rd grade classrooms! See you there!

3 Time X-Games Gold Medalist at Fairview

Posted Friday, March 23rd, 2012 by Mrs. Lewis

Fairview was fortunate enough to have Matt Wilhelm perform for us right on our very own playground.  SUPER-rad!  Matt is a three time gold medalist and most recently he was a semi-finalist on “America’s Got Talent.”

Fairview School and PTA sponsored Matt Wilhelm to do an assembly as a reward for great PBIS behaviors.  Way to go, Fairview!  Matt’s program included amazing BMX bike stunts, while speaking about bullying, perseverance, character and bike safety.  One of the highlights was Matt jumping over 3 staff members during his performances.

It was “Opening Day” at Fairview School

Posted Monday, March 5th, 2012 by Mrs. Lewis

On Friday, Fairview had it’s “Opening Day” Assembly to kick off the ISAT testing that begins Tuesday, March 6th.  The assembly reviewed test taking strategies, while getting students pumped up to do their very best on their testing this week.  Each classroom represented a professional baseballs teams.  We had Chicago White Sox, Chicago Cubs, Tampa Bay Rays, Pittsburgh Pirates and Detroit Tigers to name a few.

The new local baseball team, the Schaumburg Boomers, was represented too with Coop, the Boomers’ mascot, to help entertain the crowd.  Our very own Freddie the Falcon made an appearance too.  There was some friendly competition between Freddie and Coop, racing to answer some questions about ISAT testing.  Of course, our one and only Freddie the Falcon won!  We would have expected nothing more from someone representing Fairview School.

Please help your child to do his/her personal best on the ISAT testing.  Read the following letter from Mrs. Rivera, explaining what you can do to help your child this week.

Dear Parent or Guardian:

We will be giving students the state-required achievement tests on March 5 through March 16, 2012.  The tests are a part of the Illinois Standards Achievement Test (ISAT) program, and are being given to all eligible students.  Students in grades 4 and 7 will be tested in reading, mathematics and science.  Students in grades 3, 5, 6, and 8 will be tested in reading and mathematics.  The results of these achievement tests will be reported to you on the School Report Card in the fall.  We will review state test results along with other information to help us improve our school program.  In addition, you will receive information about your child’s performance on the state tests he or she took.

You can help your child do his or her best on the test by:

  1. making sure, if possible, that your child attends school on the day of testing;
  2. making sure your child gets a good night’s sleep the night before testing;
  3. providing breakfast on the mornings of testing;
  4. reminding your child to ask the teacher questions if he or she does not understand the test directions;
  5. letting your child know that you have confidence in his or her ability to do his or her best; and
  6. advising your child not to worry about the test – just do the best he or she can.

Please call your child’s teacher if you want additional information or have further questions about these tests.

We look forward to sharing the ISAT results with you this fall.

Sincerely yours,

Mrs. Rivera

Fairview Receives the Illinois Academic Excellence Award

Posted Sunday, February 12th, 2012 by Mrs. Lewis

Congratulations to Fairview School! On Tuesday, February 7th we were the proud recipients of the Illinois Academic Excellence Award for the third consecutive year.

The Illinois Honor Roll celebrates the accomplishments of Illinois public schools that are providing high quality education for all their students. To achieve this award, schools must meet the following criteria:

· All schools must have made Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) in 2010 and 2011.

· At preschool through eighth grade schools: 90 percent of students must have met or exceeded state standards in both reading and mathematics for the three most recent school years.

State Superintendent Koch hosted a press conference here in District 54 at Collins School.  Students, Angel P. and Jack R., along with Mrs. Watson, Ms. Pleiss, Mrs. Gurga and Mrs. Rivera accepted this award on Fairview’s behalf. We know that all twelve schools who earned this distinction join Fairview in celebrating this award with the hard-working students, staff and parent community. Without this important partnership, we would not be able to achieve academic excellence.
