Dear Fairview Community,

Due to the forecast over the next 36 hours, we are going to need to cancel our field day for tomorrow and utilize our rain date of Tuesday May 28th. Unfortunately, there is a 60% of rain for tomorrow and continued rain throughout the day impacting the field and creating puddles throughout our blacktop. Our physical education teacher will have activities planned for the outside for Tuesday, or if we need to move the activities indoors he will have those activities planned as well. Our students love to have the outdoor experience with field day and we are hoping to be able to have an outdoor event. As we are extremely appreciative of our volunteers, if you are unable to volunteer on Tuesday, or now are able to volunteer due to the change in dates, please connect with our physical education teacher, Jim Hawkins (jimhawkins@sd54.org).

As the end of the school year is quickly approaching there are a few items we want to bring to your attention. Please remember that on Friday, students have a non-attendance day. There is no school on Monday in honor of Memorial Day.

Also, there are still a few families that have not returned their registration forms that were sent home earlier this spring. In addition, we have families that need to turn in proof of residency. Please turn in those forms as soon as possible. The school office will close on June 7th for the rest of the summer and will reopen on August 6th.

Dear Fairview Community,

It has been amazing to see the change in the weather. We have gone from students needing a light jacket to shorts and t-shirts. It is truly beginning to feel as if the end of the year is approaching with the warm weather. Before we head off into the summer there are just a few items to review.

Dress Code

Although it is warmer outside and students are dressing for summer, we’d like to remind parents that students should wear clothing that is appropriate for school. Recently, we have had some children come to school in attire that is not appropriate for the learning environment. We would like parents to keep the dress code in mind with Field Day soon approaching. If parents are unsure of particular items please feel free to call the school office or your child’s classroom teacher.

Homework Club

For those students that have participated in homework club, we hope this has been a beneficial resource for parents and for students. Last Thursday, was our last day of homework club for the school year.

Field Day

This year our theme is Baseball. Each classroom has a team they have chosen. Students can choose to wear the colors of that team, or an item from that particular team. Please make sure your children have gym shoes as they will be doing a lot of physical activity. If it continues to be warm, there will be a station with a water game. It may be beneficial for students to not wear white clothing. There will be a letter from our P.E. teacher outlining some key points of the day.

Patriotic Day

On the 22nd of May we will be celebrating Patriotic Day. Our students have learned songs from the different branches during their music class. Fairview is also collecting change that will be used to purchase items for the Hines VA Hospital. This is a wonderful opportunity for our students to learn about giving back to individuals who have given us so much. Students are encouraged to wear red, white and blue.

Important Dates for 2013-2014

As we are coming to the close of another wonderful school year, we want to provide our parents with information for the 2013-2014 school year.

Information Day= August 9th (9-12:00 and 6:00-8:00 p.m.). New families may register at this time at Fairview. Class list will also be posted for families to view.

Supply Drop-Off=August 19 (3:30-6:30). Students in grades first through sixth can drop off their school supplies in their classroom and meet their teacher. Families can then head down to the gymnasium for a PTA Ice Cream Social.

First Day of School = August 21st. Students in grades first through sixth grade will begin another year of learning.

Curriculum Night=August 28th. This event is for parents only as teachers will be going through their expectations for the year, classroom procedures, learning outcomes and answer questions. There are two sessions to accommodate parents with multiple children. The first session starts is from 6:45-7:15 p.m., and the second session is from 7:30-8:00.

Good Afternoon,

It was wonderful seeing many of our families at the Open House and Celebrate Reading and Writing event last week. I enjoyed walking through the hallways and reading the books created by our Fairview authors. Many of the classrooms showcased other student-created artifacts for families to view, and it demonstrates the amazing learning that happens at Fairview. It is hard to believe that we are almost at the end of the school year, but there are still many fun events still to come!

Patriotic Day

Every year Fairview has a Patriotic Day. Our P.T.A. facilitates this event, during the school day for our students and staff. This year our Patriotic Day Assembly will take place on May 22nd at 1:00 p.m. On that day we will be having a red, white, and blue Spirit Day as well. We thought it might be fun to have each branch of the military represented so that we can honor soldiers with our songs. We are wondering if any Fairview families have any family members or close friends who might like to come be honored at our assembly? During the assembly, the honored guests would be asked to participate by sharing their basic information: name, branch served, the dates served, and maybe one fact about what they did specifically. Due to space issues in the gym, the assembly will not be open to all Fairview families. If you are a current or former service member who would like to join us, please contact Jen Minch at 847-605-8311 or sachtlebenminch@yahoo.com to reserve a spot on the guest list.

MAP Results

Parents have asked about their child’s results from the MAP tests. Each student will receive an individualized report that will show his /her progress over time. These reports will be sent home by May 17th, with a letter from our district. This year the Fairview students did an amazing job, as we saw an increase in the number of students hitting their individualize growth targets. There was also an increase in the percent of students that are performing at or above grade level. If you do not receive your child’s MAP report by May 17th , please connect with your child’s classroom teacher.

On behalf of the staff, I would like to thank our parent community for a wonderful Teacher Appreciation week. Thank you for truly making the week amazing! We are fortunate to work with a supportive community.

Below is the last edition of the “Falcon Flyer” for the 2012-2013 school year! There is also some information for a summer program with the Hoffman Estates Police Department. Enjoy the last edition of the Falcon Flyer for 2012-2013!

Last week definitely made for an interesting week with the rain and all the effects that occurred from the storms. I am sure you were happy to have a weekend free of rain, even if it at times the wind may have been a little brisk. Looking ahead to our week, some of our students will enjoy a change in the schedule as they head out on a field trip. Our 1st and 2nd grade students will enjoy a play on Monday at Dominican University. Other student are putting their finishing touches on their Celebrate Reading and Writing books and are anticipating the viewing of all the books during our Open House.

MAP Testing

We are heading into our second week of MAP testing. Most of our students in grades 2nd through 6th grade completed their reading tests. Our kindergarten and first grade students took the first part of both the reading and math tests. During the second week of testing our students will be taking the math portion of MAP (2ndthrough 6th grade) or the second portion of reading and math (kindergarten through 1st grade). Our students performed well last week and we are looking forward to seeing even better results this week. Listed below is the weekly schedule for MAP testing.

The week of the 29th will be a rather busy week at Fairview. Our science fair will take place on the 29th and we will have our awards program on the 30th at 7:00 p.m. On Wednesday, the 1st of May, we will be having our annual Open House and Celebrate Reading and Writing Night. This is a wonderful time to take a walk through Fairview and see the amazing learning that has taken place all year long. Many of our Reflections projects will be showcased in the LRC. Please take a moment to pop in to see the gallery. We understand how busy this time of year can be, but we look forward to seeing you walking the halls during Open House.

Dear Fairview Community,

Our students in grades 3 through 6 have finished ISAT testing. They did an excellent job and were able to demonstrate their knowledge. I am confident that we will be very pleased with results when they arrive in a few months. Thank you for your support, not only during the testing days, but every day as you partner with us in your child’s education.

It’s hard to believe that we only have one week before we head into Spring Break! Our last week will be rather busy here at Fairview. Today our students participated in our annual Disaster Drill. Some of you may remember this from your childhood, which was known as the Tornado Drill. Tomorrow our students will enjoy a Cultural Arts assembly sponsored by the P.T.A. I am sure they will have a lot to talk about when they come home. Wednesday, Fairview will be a busy place as we host visitors from a school in Wisconsin that want to observe some of the wonderful things happening here. We will wrap up our week with a Career Fair on Friday morning for our students in grades 3-6.

If you have not yet taken the “5Essentials Survey”, please take some time to do so. The survey was designed to offer individuals an opportunity to share their thoughts on the important elements of school effectiveness and help guide school improvement. The survey closes March 31, 2013. If you would like to take the survey, please follow this link: https://survey.5-essentials.org/illinois/

Below is a link to access information about the Multi-Cultural Fair that is hosted by our district. This event is known as A Garden of Diversity: Celebrating Our Community’s Culture. This can be a wonderful experience where families are able to learn about different cultures from adults and students.

Finally, as we are looking ahead to the next school year I would like to remind parents about some of the information we need annually. You will soon have copies of your registration forms sent home. We are asking that you review this information and ensure that we have all the accurate information on file. Also, please know that due to changes in Board Policy effective February 2008 an annual renewal of parental permission for Internet, email and district network will be included on your child’s registration form for the upcoming school year in the spring of 2013. Failure to sign and return these documents by the deadline date will deny your child’s access to the Internet, email and district network for the 2013-2014 school year and he/she will not be able to access the above until the new registration and internet forms are returned. Returning these forms back to Fairview is extremely important as we prepare for the upcoming school year.

Dear Fairview Community,

Today is our third day of ISAT testing! Due to the snow day on Tuesday, we will be extending our ISAT testing into next week. Our goal is to be finished with testing on Tuesday, the 12th. The staff appreciates the assistance you have provided this week by ensuring your children are well rested, eating a healthy breakfast, and providing nutritious snacks.

Below you will find the link for the March edition of the Falcon Flyer. There are a few items I hope you look over within this edition, because spring is a very busy time here at Fairview. Please look over the calendar as there are many events happening throughout the district.

The PTA has many open committees for next year. Some committees are perfect for working parents that want to be involved and volunteer. After reading the descriptions of the different committees if there is something that you are interested in, please connect with one of our PTA board members.

Finally, if you are a first or second grade parent please read the letter about our musical performance taking place in April.

Enjoy the weekend and remember to set you clocks ahead one hour on Sunday!

Dear Fairview Community,

Here are some important dates in the next week or so:

Kindergarten Registration

On February 28th, he district will be holding registration for kindergarten for the 2013-2014 school year. Parents may register at the school where their child will be attending for the upcoming school year. The hours for registration are 9:00-11:00 a.m., 1:00-2:30 p.m., and 6:00-8:00 p.m. District 54 now offers online registration to expedite the registration process. Please note that while parents and legal guardians can register their children online, they will still need to visit their neighborhood school to present documentation including – but not limited to – proof of residency, an immunization record and an official birth certificate. To register online, please visit the district website and click Registration underneath the category of Popular Links.

ISAT Testing

As you know, our state tests are quickly approaching. Fairview students will be testing beginning March 5th. Every year our staff creates a fun theme for the students to create some excitement towards the week of testing. This year’s theme is Rock the ISATs. All students in 3rd through 6th grade will take the reading and math assessments, while 4th graders will take an additional science assessment. The students will test daily through March 8th. Please help ensure our students are prepared by doing the following:

Please make sure your child gets a full night’s sleep and is on time for school.

Please make sure your child has a nutritious breakfast.

Please encourage your child to do his/her best and remind them that their tests are important for them, the school, etc.

Please do not schedule flexible appointments that would require your child to miss school during the testing window.

ISAT Cut Scores

Please read the letter from Superintendent Rafferty regarding changes to the upcoming ISAT assessment which are students will be taking in March. As always, thank you for your continued support.

Student Absences

Recently we have received many phone calls about upcoming student absences. Recently, we have seen an increase in the number of students arriving late to school. Attendance, and being on time for school, is extremely important, becasue when students are not here, they are missing instruction. We understand that there are events that arise in a student’s life that may cause them to miss school. Please note, that vacations are not excused absences.

Totally 80s Dance Party

The PTA is hosting a Dance Party on Friday, March 1st. This event takes place at Fairview in the evening. It is a wonderful family event. See the link below to access more information about this event.

Feb. 15, 2013

Dear Parents and Guardians,

Today the students at Fairview School were brought into the building upon arrival at school due to reports of a carjacking that allegedly began in Chicago and ended near Meacham and Golf roads in Schaumburg.

We contacted the Schaumburg Police Department who said at that time they were no longer searching for the individual in the area and we did not need to change bus routes or lock down the school. However, we decided to err on the side of caution and bring students into the building, rather than making them wait outside when they arrived at school.

Please know that your child’s safety is important to the Fairview staff. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate tocontactme at (847) 357-5700.

Sincerely,

Mrs. Faith Rivera

Principal
